Ingredients

1 cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup sour milk
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp salt
4 cups flour

Heat to soften the shortening or beat with an electric mixer (medium) for about thirty seconds. Add about half the flour and all of the remaining ingredients. Mix until thoroughly combined. Mix in the remaining flour to form a soft dough. Form the dough into balls (about 1” in diameter), roll in granulated sugar and place about 2 -3 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 350° oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until the edges are browned. Cool on a wire rack.

If you want to eat these like my Grandpa Carolan you spread butter on the back of the cookies and eat them upside down. Usually after lunch or maybe a baked bean sandwich.
